Friday Night in Chinatown

Swarthmore also has a weekend Philly shuttle (free!) for students to venture out into various hotspots of Philly, namely Chinatown and South Street. Any Swarthmore student can sign up on this site, and can reserve any available seats, and pickup times/locations. I think this is definitely a best-kept secret. The alternative method of getting to Philly is hopping on the train, which is also conveniently located minutes away from most dorm buildings. However, a round-trip train ride to Philly costs $11. No can do. Nu-uh.

Since there aren’t many options in Swat’s immediate neighborhood for good food many Swatties usually venture out into Philly for such a need. My friends and I went to Chinatown last Friday night. I heard great things about a restaurant called Sang Kee Peking Duck House, whose special dish is… Peking Duck. That also meant, by default, we were ordering Peking Duck. In addition, we ordered Mabo Tofu, Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, Shrimp with Scallion, and Cashew Chicken. The chef also gave us a plate of what seemed to be leftover ingredients (string beans, onions, some meat… – whatever. It was good.) Sang Kee is definitely a restaurant solid Chinese food for decent prices. Light-years ahead of Swarthmore’s Cheng Hing’s and Happy Wok.

Enough words. Look at the pictures.

  1. Mmm, looks good! Too bad I only went to Sang Kee a few times while I was in the area. I’ll have to go back again sometime. Take advantage of Philly and Chinatown while you still can!
